With the layoffs in the Findlay Fire Department set to begin next month, the president of the union that represents the firefighters discussed the issue today on WFINat10. Local 381 President Matt Cooper says informal talks a between the union and the city are continuing... (Audio Below)
Cooper mentioned one of the things they've tried to address is legacy costs from firefighters who have retired.
Cooper says they would like to see the better than expected budget figures used to keep staffing at it's current level until the city can take a better look at the numbers... (Audio Below)
The city has said that the carryover balance in question isn't a sustainable number.
Much like police officers who were facing layoffs at the end of last year, Cooper says Findlay firefighters are looking elsewhere for work before they are possibly let go... (Audio Below)
Cooper says that investment is more than just a paycheck, but also payment for training the firefighters who are on staff.
