Fostoria Police Chief John McGuire is accusing the city of retaliating against him for filing a workers compensation claim by holding up payment of unused vacation time. The Review Times reports that McGuire, who's been on paid medical leave since July, sought to cash out nearly 244 hours of unused vacation time to which Mayor Eric Keckler said no payout will be granted until an attorney confirmed it would not complicate the workman's comp claim.
McGuire responded in an e-mail by accusing Keckler of disregarding long-standing city policy for cashing in vacation time and said it smacked of retaliation and is quite possibly illegal and questionable at best.
Keckler denied the allegations and responded to McGuire by saying that he had never maligned or spoken ill of his BWC claim and, in fact, had always had compassion for his injuries and concern for his physical well-being.
McGuire has not filed any formal complaints with the city so far.
