Prep track: L-B girls 2nd at state indoor meet; McComb's Leppelmeier wins twice
AKRON -- Led by a championship performance from freshman Michaela Butler, Liberty-Benton's girls track team finished second in the Division II-III standings at Saturday's Ohio Association of Track and Cross Country Coaches Indoor state championships.

The Eagles scored 241/3 points to edge Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy by just one-third of a point for second place. Dayton Chaminade-Julienne won with 31 points.

McComb, on the strength of double winner Becca Leppelmeier, was sixth in the 66-team field with 20 points.

Butler dominated the girls 60-meter dash, winning in 7.76 seconds, .17 of a second ahead of Dayton Chaminade-Julienne senior Devanae Mitchell. Just .13 of a second separated second through eighth place.

The Eagles' Liz Streaker (45-8) and Alex Devincentis (45-4) finished third and fifth, respectively, in the girls weight throw.

The Eagles also got valuable points in four other events.

Taylor Thomas, Madi Greiner, Kate Baumlein and Mackenzie Briggs were seventh in the 3,200 relay (10:07.77).

Greiner was eighth in the 1,600 (5:38.05), Briggs eighth in the 800 (2:25.01) and Megan Peplinski eighth in the high jump (5-0).

Leppelmeier dominated the throws.

The McComb senior uncorked a throw of 45-3 on her second attempt of the prelims to win the shot by more than 2½ feet over Garrettsville Garfield's Edie Svonavec.

In the weight throw, Leppelmeier put together a 53-7 on her second throw of the finals to set a meet record and beat her nearest competitor, Waverly's Liza Wall, by more than five feet.

The area's other top-eight finish in the girls meet came from Riverdale's Sarah Hunter who was eighth in the triple jump (31-1).

Liberty-Benton also had a strong performance in the boys Division II-III meet.

The Eagles' Dylan Cornwell took the state title in the pole vault at 14-9.

Brian Miller was fourth in the high jump (6-4), Chase Cook placed sixth in the long jump (20-9¼) and Cook teamed with Bobby Snook, Chase Conkle and Kyle Bowsher for eighth in the 800 relay (1:34.4).

Eastwood edged Warren JFK 36-33 for the boys championship.

Liberty-Benton tied for seventh among the 64 teams with 19 points.

Findlay High had one placer in the Division I boys meet. Bryce Burnside was eighth in the weight throw (60-4).

Teammate Cody Swisher was 12th in the pole vault at 13-0.
