Local Sports from The CourierSunday, January 27, 2013College Basketball: Ohio Northern women post 17th straight winMARIETTA -- The Ohio Northern women's basketball team blitzed Marietta College 61-44 Saturday in Ohio Athletic Conference play and extended its winning streak to a school-record 17 straight games. The victory leaves ONU 18-1 overall and 12-0 in the OAC. Cenzie Yoder led the Polar Bears with 13 points and grabbed five rebounds. Morgan Dumbaugh, a former Ada High School star, had 10 points and 4 rebounds while Joanna Snyder contributed eight points and 10 rebounds. Krissy Rowe led Marietta (6-13, 1-11) with 11 points, three assists and two steals while Candice Alexander added 11 points and grabbed six boards. Beavers hold on BLUFFTON -- The Bluffton University men's basketball team led by as many 10 points four times during the second half but the Beavers had to hold on for a 72-69 Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference win over Franklin Saturday during Hall of Fame Day at the Sommer Center. The Grizzlies got as close as 70-69 with four seconds left, but Ryan Ebbeskotte hit two free throws for Bluffton and Gunner Erwin's buzzer-beating attempt missed allowing the Beavers to claim their fifth win in six games. Will Pope (15 points), Ebbeskotte (13), Josh Fisher (12) and Billy Taflinger (12) each scored in double figures for Bluffton (9-10, 5-7 HCAC). Pope also secured eight rebounds for the Beavers. Erwin exploded for 29 points in Franklin's (11-8, 6-6) losing effort. BU women beaten BLUFFTON -- A second half surge thrust Franklin past Bluffton University 61-50 Saturday in Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference women's basketball action. Franklin (14-5, 9-3) led by only three points at the break but a 10-point second half effort from Jess Prewett guided the Grizzlies to their ninth win in conference play. Prewett finished the game with 14 points and six rebounds. Katie Dale led the team with 17 points with four treys while Krista Schott scored 11 points and grabbed six rebounds. Lindsey Dall contributed with 10 points, five rebounds and one block. Taylor Whitaker paced Bluffton (9-10, 4-8) with 17 points and two steals while Brooke Ruffer scored 10 points and grabbed 15 rebounds. Cold shooting stalls ONU ADA -- Ohio Northern made shot just 24 percent, hitting 6 of 25 attempts, in the first half as the Polar Bears 69-60 to Marietta Saturday in Ohio Athletic Conference action at the ONU Sports Center. Ohio Northern (8-11, 4-8 OAC) got within 63-58 with 1:07 left in the game, but the Pioneers made 6 of 8 free throws to clinch the win. J.J. Martin scored 17 points to lead Marietta (14-5, 10-2). Jared Horstman, a Fort Jennings native, and Taylor Kuhlman, who prepped at Ottawa-Glandorf, led Ohio Northern with 13 and 12 points, respectively. Horstman added a team-high seven rebounds.
