GLIAC Women's Basketball: Findlay finishes January with 7-1 record
The University of Findlay women's basketball team capped off the month of January with a 67-55 win over Malone University on Saturday afternoon in a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference encounter at Croy Gymnasium.

The win caps an impressive run as the Oilers (14-4, 11-3 GLIAC) finished the month with a 7-1 record by knocking off the Pioneers (10-8, 6-8).

Findlay shot only 39.7 percent (23 of 58) from the field but got a big lift from Kayla Brown, who poured in 14 points. The former Riverdale star also grabbed three rebounds, dished out three assists and racked up six steals.

Karli Beasley came through with 9 points while Kaleigh Kenny and Tai Dotson clicked for 8 apiece as seven players scored at least seven points. Dotson pulled down five boards and Findlay finished with 28 rebounds. The Pioneers grabbed 29 rebounds and shot 44 percent (22 of 50) from the field.

Malone was paced by Sydnee Penn's 16 points. Deborah Simmers added 10.

One of the keys to success for the Oilers, who led 29-27 at the break after the Pioneers rallied from a 27-17 deficit behind a 10-2 run, was the fact that they were able to step up defensively.

Findlay forced 32 turnovers and has forced 432 on the season. Ashley Andrews helped aid that effort as she came through with four steals to go along with 7 points. The Oilers turned the ball over 18 times.

Malone got as close as 34-29 early in the second half before Kaleigh Kenny knocked down a trey to stretch the Findlay lead to 37-29. Kenny's 3-pointer with 16:22 to play put the Oilers on top 42-32 and the Pioneers never got closer than seven the rest of the way.

Findlay, which is second in the GLIAC South Division and tied for second overall in the conference standings, has a week off before getting back to action against Hillsdale 7-10, 4-10), which beat Walsh 83-67 on Saturday. The Oilers and Chargers will play at 3 p.m. Saturday at Jesse Phillips Arena.
