Local Sports from The CourierMonday, January 21, 2013Prep swimming: Findlay boys second, girls third at TRAC meetFREMONT -- Justin Hopkins made a big splash for the Findlay High boys swimming team Saturday afternoon. The freshman performer won two events to help the Trojans finish second to Northwest Ohio swimming kingpin Toledo St. Francis at the Three Rivers Athletic Conference swimming and diving championships at the Fremont Ross natatorium. The Knights won seven events and accounted for all three boys meet-record performances on the day in piling up 741 points. Findlay, which got a pair of runner-up finishes and a pair of third places as well, finished with 533 points. Fremont Ross had 450 for third. Findlay's girls team did not have a swimming champion Saturday, but got a strong performance from Laura Wilson and finished third with 444 points. Fremont Ross, which accounted for three of the six girls meet records, won the team title with 523 points and Toledo Notre Dame was second with 499. Hopkins was impressive in his TRAC championship debut, winning the 200 freestyle in 1:49.55. Teammate Tucker Stocker was third in 1:52.77. Hopkins then captured the 500 free, posting a 4:56.76 effort. He also joined his older brother, Kyle, Ross Stansbery and Dietrich Hinesman to place third (3:24.02) in the 400 free relay. Hinesman, the defending 100 butterfly champion, had a pair of runner-up finishes. He was second in the 50 free (22.52) and the 100 fly (54.63). Kyle Hopkins was second in the 100 backstroke (55.25) after winning the event a year ago. He also was runner-up in the 200 individual medley (2:03.67). Findlay, which benefits from its overall depth, got runner-up finishes from its 200 medley and 200 free relay teams. Jeremy Wilson, Stocker, Kyle Hopkins and Hinesman were second in the 200 free relay (1:30.60), and Stansbery, Graham Copus, Stocker and Wilson went 1:45.68 for second in the 200 medley relay. Wilson, Octavia Homka, Ashley Lewis and Kendra Wadding were second in the girls 200 free relay (1:46.65) for the Trojans' best finish. Wilson added third places in the 50 free (26.00) and 100 fly (1:04.50). The Findlay girls team, though, had a champion on Friday night when Kyah Fleckner took the 1-meter diving with a meet and pool record total of 408.30. Bethany Glick was second (397.95).
