Local Sports from The CourierMonday, January 21, 2013Prep wrestling: Carey second at VBIStaff Writer VAN BUREN -- Carey's Brayden Leist did everything he could to pin Otsego's Trenton Soto in the 132-pound finals. Turns out the Blue Devils would have needed more than a pin by Leist to defend their Van Buren Invitational team title. Wayne Trace, which trailed Carey all weekend, pulled ahead of the Blue Devils during the finals and won the tournament with a 155½-148½ margin. Leist had Soto on his back and nearly pinned for most of the third period before time ran out and he had to settle for a 16-2 victory. With the win in the final, Leist became the 20th three-time VBI champion in the tournament's 35-year run. Bluffton's Zach Wilson, the tournament's Most Valuable Wrestler, also won his third VBI crown. "It means a lot, being a three-time champ is pretty cool. I had a pretty tough weight class that year, I didn't win it so there are no regrets about it," said Leist, who was sixth at the VBI as a sophomore while winning titles his freshman, junior and senior seasons. "I was trying to get the pin. I knew we needed the team points and I have a goal to get 100 pins before the season is over. I'm getting there." His goal of 100 falls is within reach. Leist has around 85 pins and has three tournaments and the dual team tournament left before the postseason. Lincoln Stansberry was the only other Carey champion. Stansberry, the top seed at 182 pounds, gave up an opening takedown to Riverdale's Tre Headington before bouncing back for an 8-6 win. The Blue Devil senior improved his record to 25-1 with the victory. Tyler Higgins (138) and Zach Brodman (145) added second-place finishes for Carey. Bluffton's Wilson, meanwhile, was once again dominant on the VBI mats. Wilson, who was second in the VBI as a freshman, dominated his 152-pound championship match with Riverdale's Seth Knoll. Wilson rolled up a 17-6 lead before scoring a pin in 4:22. "It's nice to win a third championship, but this is all practice for the end of the year," Wilson said. "That's when it really counts." Wilson, a two-time state placer and perhaps the most talented wrestler in the 23-team VBI field, knows this is the beginning of the postseason push. He'll try and win his third title at the tough Lima Central Catholic Invitational before going for his third straight Northwest Conference crown the following week. "This is it, this is when you start peaking and this is the time of the year when you want to begin to wrestle your best," said Wilson, who improved his record to 24-0 with the win. Wilson will be happiest if he wrestles his best match of the season on March 2, the final night of the OHSAA state tournament.
