Local Sports from The CourierSunday, January 13, 2013GLIAC Women's Basketball: Findlay holds off Tiffin, 67-61STAFF WRITER It's been awhile since the University of Findlay women's basketball team has picked up a win over Tiffin University. The Oilers haven't knocked off the Dragons since the 2010-11 campaign, but they found a way to end the drought Saturday afternoon with a 67-61 win over the Dragons in a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference South Division battle at Croy Gymnasium. Findlay (11-3, 8-2 GLIAC) has rattled off five consecutive wins and sits in second place in the division behind top-ranked and unbeaten Ashland. "It's an amazing feeling to win this game," senior forward Tai Dotson said. "It's a big win and we just want to continue our success." The Oilers and Dragons (7-7, 4-6) went into halftime tied 27-27 after a 3-pointer by Kayla Brown and led 35-28 with 17:38 to play after two free throws by Kendra Elam. But with 3:20 to go, Findlay was down 58-54. Brown nailed a trey and hit two free throws after a steal by Dotson to give the Oilers a 59-58 advantage. Findlay never looked back and won despite shooting only 37 percent (20 of 54) from the field. Brown scored 13 points and Dotson 11. "We knew going in that this was going to be a tough game," Findlay head coach Kate Cummings said. "Tiffin is good and always elevates its game against us. It was just a matter of perseverance and who would make the plays when it mattered." The Oilers were able to make those big plays time and again and were 23 of 31 from the free-throw line. Kendra Elam led the way as she went 9 of 12, including hitting two shots with 12 seconds left that gave Findlay a 65-61 lead. Findlay also got 28 points from its bench. "Our bench crew gave an amazing effort and played with a lot of energy," Cummings said. "Our strength is our depth. We showed a lot of composure late in the game." Tiffin shot 32.1 percent (17 of 53) from the field and got 16 points from Jessica Harris. The Dragons were outscored 28-10 in the paint. The Oilers now shift their attention to rival Ashland. The Eagles (17-0, 10-0) rocked Malone 81-57 on Saturday for their 42nd consecutive win. "We have to get into practice and work hard," Dotson said. "We have to play as hard as we possibly can Thursday. If we do that, there is no reason why we can't hang with them and maybe have a shot to win." tiffin (7-7, 4-6) Harris 6-8 4-6 16, Adams 1-6 2-2 4, Storlie 0-5 3-4 3, Kelly 3-5 6-6 14, Gilliland 4-12 2-2 14, Campbell 1-4 1-3 3, Fraley 1-10 0-0 3, Farr 1-3 2-2 4.
