Local Sports from The CourierWednesday, January 09, 2013Boys basketball: Redskins get their first winStaff Writer BETTSVILLE -- By the look on Arcadia boys basketball coach Cara Noel's face you would have never known she had just collected her first win as a boys head coach. Arcadia was more than Bettsville could handle Tuesday night as the Redskins picked up their initial victory of the season by dumping the Bobcats 66-39 in nonconference boys basketball game. The Redskins, who dropped their first nine games of the season, got out of the gate quickly against the Bobcats. Arcadia jumped out to a 13-0 lead midway through the first quarter as freshman Shae Watkins dominated play inside with three buckets. It was more of the same in the second quarter as Chad Baker, who led four Arcadia players in double figures with 17 points, scored eight points to give the Redskins a 31-12 lead in the intermission. As Noel followed her team into the locker room, one could tell she was less than pleased with the way the first half unfolded. "I have 3-point shooters and kids that attack and drive to the basket and no one was attacking the basket," Noel said. "Because of the level of competition out there, the kids weren't doing what they were supposed to do. They weren't playing Arcadia basketball. "Once we put the press back on, we started playing with a lot more intensity and passion and that's what we want to see all the time." The Bobcats, who have lost 21 straight regular-season games and are 0-11 this season, scored the first seven points of third quarter. Logan Robinson hit a pair of free throws, Kennedy Hossler converted a three-point play and Kasey Hossler added a bucket as Bettsville trimmed Arcadia's lead to 31-19 in less than three minutes. The Bobcats' quick start to the second half was perhaps their best stretch of basketball all season according to coach Chad Garberich. Bettsville was coming off an 88-13 loss to Old Fort last Friday and another loss Saturday at Put-In-Bay. "It's been a tough year but, finally, I saw a little emotion out of our kids during the first part of the third quarter. That is something that has been missing," Garberich said. "They were playing hard and having fun out there. That was probably our best quarter of the season." In fact, Bettsville played Arcadia to a 13-13 draw in the third quarter before the Redskins settled down and took care of business in the fourth frame. Arcadia went on a 14-4 run to start the fourth quarter and led by as many as 32 in the closing minutes of the game. Casey Mock backed Baker's big night by scoring 14 points. Watkins netted 13 points and Kevin Keefe Jr. 11. Watkins and Keefe also led the Redskins in rebounds with nine and eight, respectively. Kasey Hossler scored 12 points and Kennedy Hossler netted nine for the Bobcats. With the first victory of the season under their belts, the Redskins can now focus on improving each week. "I told them to enjoy the win tonight. It's been a long time coming. They've worked hard to get it. They deserve it," Noel said.
