Local Sports from The CourierMonday, February 18, 2013Sectional wrestling: McComb's Siferd claims 138-pound titleStaff Writer CAREY -- McComb's Nick Siferd qualified for the district tournament last season. This year he's going to districts as a sectional champion after knocking off top-seeded Tyler Higgins of Carey 8-6 Saturday afternoon in the 138-pound final at the Division III sectional wrestling tournament at Carey. Siferd was unable to compete at the Van Buren Invitational earlier this season because of a skin issue. He was hoping to get a shot at Higgins then. Siferd lost to Higgins twice a season ago and after beating Riverdale's Austin Clark 4-0 in Saturday's semifinals, he was raring to wrestle in the final. "I was really motivated today. They key was not giving up and leaving everything out there," Siferd said. "Now, next week, I have to get into the top four. I've been thinking about getting to state ever since last season ended." The most-anticipated matches of the night came back-to-back at 170 and 182 pounds. Mohawk's Grant Price avenged a loss earlier in the season to Fostoria's Tony Reynolds with a 3-2 win in the 170 final that featured returning state qualifiers. Price made a first-period takedown hold up in a chippy match between two of the best wrestlers in the district. At 182, Upper Sandusky's Tylor Pritchard took a 2-1 lead in the season series against Carey's Lincoln Stansberry. Pritchard broke open a close match with a takedown and 3-point nearfall in the second period on his way to a 10-6 win over Stansberry. Pritchard's sectional championship was one of four by Upper Sandusky as the Rams won the sectional team championship with 189 points. Riverdale nipped host Carey 138½-137½ in a tight battle for second place. Thurston Dyer (106 pounds), Alex Kenner (152) and Dylan Robertson (195) also won championships for the Rams, who qualified 10 wrestlers for districts. The top four finishers in each weight class at Carey earned a spot in this week's Division III district at Bowling Green State University's Stroh Center. Carey also had a big day on its home mats as the Blue Devils advanced seven wrestlers and got championship performances from Brayden Leist (132), Zack Brodman (145) and Jacob Moran (285). Liberty-Benton's Tyler Sarreshteh survived a semifinal scare as he rallied from an early 5-0 deficit to knock off Riverdale's Koltin Martin 7-6. He won the 113-pound title later in the day with a 7-2 win over Upper Sandusky's Carson Mengerink. Three other area wrestlers won sectional crowns: • Riverdale's Mitchel Matheny took the 120-pound title with a 7-5 win over Fostoria's Luke Leonard. • Van Buren's Chance Sonnenberg stopped Upper Sandusky's Cory Frey 13-4 at 160 pounds. • Hopewell-Loudon's Alex Brock won the 126 title by beating Upper Sandusky's Derek Hansen 11-3.
