Local Sports from The CourierMonday, February 18, 2013District swimming: Trojans will send 9 swimmers, divers to stateAs expected, Toledo St. Francis won the boys title with 411 points. Strongsville topped Findlay 333-239 for second place in the 25-team field. The top two swimmers and relays in each event automatically qualified for the OHSAA state championships at Canton's C.T. Branin Natatorium. FHS senior Dietrich Hinesman and freshman Justin Hopkins punched their tickets to state by winning district championships, Hinesman in the 100-yard freestyle (21.35) and Hopkins in the 500 free (4:43.11). With the rest of the state meet field being determined by the fastest times from district tournaments across the state, swimmers had to wait until Sunday to learn whether or not they would be packing for a trip to state. When those results were tabulated, Finlday had qualified for state in three other individual events and all three relays. Hinesman, who qualified for state in four events as a junior, did so again. In addition to having the fifth-fastest qualifying time in the 100, he also advanced in the 50 free (15, 21.35) and as a member of the 200 and 400 free relays teams. Hinesman, Justin Hopkins, Kyle Hopkins and Tucker Stocker, who were fourth in the district meet in the 400 free relay (3:12.22) are seeded 13th at state in that event. Hinesman, Justin Hopkins, Jeremy Wilson and Jacob Kreinbrink also placed fourth in the 200 free relay (1:29.06) and are advancing to state with the 21st best time. Kyle Hopkins, who earned an automatic bid to state after finishing second at district in the 100 backstroke (52.39), is seeded 12th in that event at state. He also advanced in the 200 IM with the 11th-best qualifying time (1:54.80). Kyke Hopkins also qualifed for state as a member of the 200 medley relay team that was fourth at district and is seeded 18th (1:38.42) at state. Rounding out that relay will be Graham Copus, Stocker and Wilson. In Saturday's district meet at BGSU, Justin Hopkins finished fourth in the 200 free (1:45.26), Kyle Hopkins was third in the 200 individual medley and Stocker had sixth-place showings in the 200 free (1:46.31) and 100 butterfly (53.62). Strongsville topped Fremont Ross 322½-280 for the girls team championship. Findlay was 11th with 82 points. Laura Wilson had Findlay's top finish with an eighth-place effort in the 100 fly (1:01.27). The Trojans' girls will be represented in Canton, though. Kyah Fleckner and Bethany Glick qualified for state in diving earlier in the week. Ada's Matt Wilcox, who locked up a spot in the Division II state meet with a district championship in the 50 free (21.32) last Friday, found out Sunday he'll have company in Canton with both the 200 free and 200 medley relay teams also qualifying. Matt Wilcox, Mitchell Wilcox, Karl Karcher and Jon Robey have the sixth-fastest qualifying time in the 200 free relay (1:28.89) and the 20th best time in the 200 medley (1:41.74). Robey also qualified for state in the 100 free (48.93) and 100 butterfly (53.09). Fostoria's Ashlyn Roberts will also be competing at state after posting the 21st best time in the 50 free (24.67).
