Local Sports from The CourierFriday, October 05, 2012District Boys Golf: Van Buren's wait worth itfor the courier BOWLING GREEN -- It was a tense two-hour wait for Van Buren's boys golf team Thursday after finishing its round in the Division III district boys golf championships at Stone Ridge Golf Club. When the smiles finally did break out, there was as much relief as joy. The Black Knights grabbed the fourth and final qualifying spot for next week's state tournament with a 332 total, edging both Kalida and Parkway by just one stroke. Lima Central Catholic ran away with the team title by a 308-318 margin over Ottawa Hills, while Ashland Crestview finished third (320). "(That's) pretty typical when you go off first in the morning and then you've got to wait for those other teams to come in, other good teams to come in. It can be quite stressful," Van Buren coach Eric Heitkamp said. "But we're used to it. The parents and kids know that you've got to be patient and just wait it out, and it fell in our favor today." The top four teams and top four individuals not on a qualifying team moved on to state, which is set for next Friday and Saturday at North Star Golf Resort in Sunbury. Individuals advancing were Kalida's Neil Recker, whose 74 tied Crestview's Josh Brooks for overall medalist honors, along with Jeremy Hanna of Tiffin Calvert (77), Connor Dudley of Fremont St. Joseph (78) and Nick Kayser of Delphos St. John's (78). Dudley and Kayser squared off with Seneca East's Nathan Phillips on a playoff hole to secure the final two spots. Brennon Swain led the Black Knights with a 78, while Erik Glass and Tim Mutchler each carded an 84 and Sawyer Junge had an 86. Jason Sawyer shot an 87. "It is an emotional roller coaster while you're out there," Heitkamp said. "The great thing about my five guys that played today is they've been there before. They were disappointed in the way they played, especially coming down the stretch those last couple of holes, but that being said, they knew the whole time that you never know. "One shot was all it took and we were on the smiling side of that. There aren't a lot of teams that get that opportunity, so we're going to go make the most of it." Following Recker in scoring for Kalida were Cody Mathew (82), Zach Erhart (84) and Austin Hortsman (93). New Riegel took 13th (358). Korey Williams led the Blue Jackets with an 84, followed by Brady Hall's 90 and 92s from Andrew Hohman and Brandyn Reinhart. Zach Weber's 85 paced Ottoville, which followed New Riegel in 14th (361). Craig Odenweller had an 88, Derek Schimmoeller and Wesley Markward 94s. Patrick Henry was 17th (382) and got a team-leading 90 from Aaron Tietje, followed by Jacob Willford (93), Joe Nickels (98) and Jared Nelson (101). Other area individuals competing included Jason Niese of Leipsic (79), Dexter Wilson of Arlington (79), Bryce Gorrell of Hopewell-Loudon (80), Corey Bean of North Baltimore (85), and Carey's Corbin Blair (97) and Lincoln Stansberry (98). Heitkamp's goal next week will be to get his team to relax and play its best game of golf. "I have four guys on the roster that have played at the state tournament last year. The year before that Sawyer Junge was a freshman, so this will be his third appearance at the state tournament," Heitkamp said.
