SAN ANTONIO, Texas -- Senior Nate Bascom became Ohio Northern's all-time single-season assist leader as the No. 5 Ohio Northern men's soccer team topped No. 10 Susquehanna (Pa.) Saturday in the NCAA III Tournament third round.
The Polar Bears improve to 23-2 on the season and advances to the quarterfinals for the second time in school history to face either No. 4 Trinity (Texas) or No. 6 Montclair State (NJ) at 5 p.m. today.
The Crusaders finished 18-3-1.
Bascom now has 15 assists this season, which broke the previous record of 14.
Freshman Keegan Ross also scored two goals, which gives him 22 on the season and ties a single-season school record.
The Crusaders struck first in the 16th minute, Brandon Kates scoring off a corner kick. ONU responded at the 20:04 mark when Bascom took a shot that hit the post and deflected back out before Ross put in his 21st goal of the season off of the rebound.
Bascom dribbled down the left side and found senior Cameron Johnson, who buried his shot in the back of the net at the 21:53 mark for a 2-1 lead.
After ONU senior goalkeeper turned away a Crusaders corner kick, Northern expanded its lead when senior Chris Matejka took a corner kick and found senior Austin Windsor who converted a beautiful bending ball into the top left corner, putting ONU up 3-1.
The Polar Bears missed an opportunity in the 63rd minute when Ross fired a shot that was stopped and the rebound by junior Stephen Perkins of Findlay High was saved.
ONU put the game away when sophomore Chuck D'Imperio fed a ball into the box that Ross headed past the goalie at the 79:37 mark, giving Northern the 4-1 lead.
Church made two saves on the evening and improves to 23-2 on the year.
The Polar Bears outshot the Crusaders by a 23-20 margin and had an 11-3 advantage in shots on goal.
ONU also made a quarterfinal apperance in 2008 when the Bears were defeated 4-1 by Loras (Iowa).
