Girls Basketball: Findlay throttles Whitmer
A total of 10 Trojans players scored as Findlay High ran away in the second half of Thursday's 48-25 win over Three Rivers Athletic Conference rival Toledo Whitmer.

Christina McQueen had 10 points and 10 rebounds to lead the balanced attack for Findlay (3-0, 2-0 TRAC).

The Trojans led 23-16 at halftime, but edged away in the third quarter for a 33-20 lead.

Taylor Stanfield finished with eight points for the Trojans who shot 50 percent (22 of 44) from the field.

Findlay's defense held Whitmer to 27.3 percent shooting (9 of 33) and the Trojans also held a 32-17 rebounding advantage.

Samantha Meinen had 17 points and Keshyra McCarver had four rebounds for Whitmer (2-2, 0-2).

FOSTORIA -- Hannah Draper and Sydney Wentling combined for 29 points, giving Carey enough offensive power to defeat St. Wendelin on Thursday in a girls Midland Athletic League basketball matchup.

In their efforts Wentling (14 points) buried 9 of 10 free throw attempts and Draper (15 points) canned a pair of 3-pointers to pace the Blue Devils to a 5-0 overall start and a 2-0 beginning in the MAL.

Hannah Tong also collected 15 rebounds, scored 10 points and blocked three shots.

St. Wendelin's Colleen Fondessy led all scorers with 22 points after hitting 13 of 16 free throw attempts.

However, the Mohawks (2-3,0-2) shot only 27 percent (13-48) from the field.

LAKE -- Unbeaten Elmwood had three players reach double figures as the Royals knocked down Lake 52-45 on Thursday in Northern Buckeye Conference girls basketball.

Kristen Curtis led the Royals (4-0, 2-0 NBC) with 15 points, hitting nine free throws, while Brittany Gross contributed 14 points, nine rebounds, four assists and three steals.

Marissa Swavel (11 points) fired in three 3-pointers and also served up four assists.

The Royals got to the free throw line 27 times, making 16, while the Flyers (2-3, 0-1) only converted 4 of 8 at the line.

NEW RIEGEL--New Riegel hit 5 of 10 free throw attempts in the fourth quarter and held off a Hopewell-Loudon rally for a 44-41 win in Midland Athletic League play Thursday.

Kara Scherger scored a game-high 20 points and Kara Scherger finished with 16 to lead New Riegel (4-1, 2-0 MAL).

Taylor Kirian came up big in the fourth quarter for the Blue Jackets, hitting 3 of 4 free throw attempts for her only points of the game.

Danielle Rohrbach had 14 points, including five in the fourth quarter, and 11 rebounds for Hopewell-Loudon (2-2, 1-1). Courtney Burns had 11 points for the Chieftains, who outscored New Riegel 15-11 in the fourth quarter before their rally fell short.

CONTINTENTAL -- A tough day ended in a win for Continental's girls basketball team Thursday night.

Starting guard Vanessa Koppenhofer and her teammates learned during the junior varsity game that Koppenhofer's home had been lost in a fire Thursday.

The game went on without Koppenhofer as the Pirates rallied in the second half for a 56-45 nonconference victory over Tinora.

Leva Weller had a big night for the Pirates (3-1) with 14 points and 14 rebounds. Taylor Williamson netted 17 points with eight steals.

Mattie Gentit tossed in 13 points and Rachel Wachtman scored 11 for the Rams (2-3).

KALIDA -- Kalida dominated Antwerp in the second quarter with a 20-3 advantage as the Wildcats rolled to a 47-20 nonconfernece girls basketball victory on Thursday.

The Wildcats (3-1) held the Archers (0-4) below double figures in every quarter by forcing 30 turnovers and holding a 37-11 rebounding edge.

Jackie Gardner (10 points) was the only Kalida player to finish in double digits as the Wildcats shot just 33 percent (16-49) from the field.

OTTAWA -- Ottawa-Glandorf turned a three-point third-quarter deficit into a 48-45 victory over Van Wert on Thursday in Western Buckeye League girls basketball.

The Titans (2-1, 1-0 WBL), who trailed 25-19 at halftime, shot 44 percent (15 of 34) from the field and were led by Elissa Ellerbrock's 12 points.

Dani Ellerbrock and Kristen Miller each had eight points as the Titans held a 33-25 rebounding edge.

Van Wert falls to 1-3 overall and 0-1 in WBL action.
